To All,
I was also extremely pleased and proud to receive the numerous compliments from so many people that have been attending regattas throughout their young and adult lives. My perception was that their comments were not just polite gestures, but heartfelt acknowledgement of our preparations and other efforts. We did spend quite a number of hours/days/weeks/months planning and preparing and in the end, in spite of the weather; the event (in my humble opinion) was a grand success. I was extremely pleased to see the Rock Hall Fire Company and the Coast Guard presence; and even more pleased that neither were needed for more than the feeling of security that their presence provided. I was also extremely pleased to see our neighbors and the numerous sponsors from our community that pitched in. In the end though, the absolute most enjoyment that I received was the outpouring of assistance from our diverse membership and friends. Seeing all of our members working together to make this such a memorable event for the young sailors was huge in my eyes; and none if it could have been done by just a few people, no matter how much time they put in. So, for that, although there are a few that spent a bit more time, I thank all of you that gave what you were able to. As some of you may know, I have never been a fan of “exclusivity” as it relates to Rock Hall Yacht Club. The roots of this club in its earlier years were fed by the hard work of what was a very close community. I believe this event has brought us all together a bit closer and I am very pleased for that.
Once again, thank you to all.

Recycling Options for JO Event
I spoke briefly with Marty Holden of Kent County about recycling containers. As you may or may not know, Kent County has made the decision to terminate their curbside recycling program. For the event and for our normal club activities from here forward, we will need to collect, sort (glass, plastic, aluminum) and haul the recycling to the Nicholson Transfer Station. This is a decision we will need to make as a group to identify whether we think it is feasible to recycle. Clearly I would be extremely dissapointed if we did not recycle. The challenge lies with who will do the sorting and hauling. The county does not have any “corrugated” containers but does have large numbers of the small “green plastic containers;” and they are pleased to allow us use of however many of those containers we need or want.
Although they are appropriately sized for easy sorting of the contents, for the sake of this or any event, the green containers are not large enough to be useful in my opinion. Although we could station 6 or eight of them side by side at any location, I anticipate that they may result in a mess to clean up. Perhaps this is one more task for Aparecio (Laborer) and company to tend to during the continuous circuit through the site. We could also request some volunteers to help with sorting recycling after the event. If we did that, we may actually find a place that will pay even a small amount for the recycling as opposed to dropping it off at the county facility. I will follow up on other options for recouping perhaps a small amount of the cost with recycling vendors.
As a group, we need to make the following decisions:
A: Manpower
1. Use paid labor (Aparecio and company) to collect recycling from containers during the regular circuit through the site and sort into larger containers to be ready for hauling.
2. Request volunteers to tend to collect and sort during the event
3. Do not recycle at all.
B: Containers
1. Purshase larger pre-labeled and recognizable recycling containers
2. Make our own recycling containers by purchasing large plastic trash cans; cutting holes in the tops and labeling them for recycling.
3. Use the county's smaller green rectangular containers
4. Do not recycle at all.

Lesson's Learned from last year's JO
Aimee from BCSC was kind enough to share the lesson's learned presentation she made about hosting last year's JOs. Here is the link to her presentation. Let's all review prior to next month's meeting so that we can actively discuss it as input to making the RHYC JOs awesome!

Shuttle Service for Overflow Parking
Did anyone else see the post on Facebook? "Lankford Bay Marina is beginning operation of its very own bus service to and from Rock Hall. The service will operate daily from May 1st until the end of boating season. For details about schedules and rates contact Lankford Bay Marina..." What do you think about me contacting them to see if they would sponsor shuttle service for the JOs between RHYC and the overflow parking?

P.R. - Calendar Release
A new Calendar Press Announcement and photo (attached) has just been sent to regional media outlets (newspapers, magazines, etc.) in hopes of getting in their calendar listings and editorial plans. We've also sent this information to yacht clubs in 4 states and class association contacts to try to get on their websites and newsletters.
Please send any contacts (name, email, organization) who need this info to Jan Ross (email in sidebar). If you have good photos from junior sailing events that are approved for use on the web and/or the press please send those along with a caption, too! thanks. JR

Friday Night Fun Activities
Harry has organized Geoff Becker, the previous sailing coach from Washington College to host a rules racing seminar on Friday night. Way to go Harry! We'd like the club to organize a kid friendly meal and therefore benefit from the food sales. Also, what do you think of a schedule for the evening that includes the rules seminar first followed by the movie that Sailing Emporium is hosting at the club(along with ice cream). We'll need it to be dark for the outdoor movie anyway. Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Fund Raiser
Carol had an excellent idea. What if some of the kids and volunteers assist the kitchen staff in hosting a dinner. Proceeds could benefit the JOs and we could auction off some of the key donations that Carol has secured that would be more appropriate to local people.

First Aid & CPR Training
In searching for First Aid and CPR training, I found that having a trainer come to our site would be fairly expensive. The most convenient and economical approach I found, is through Kent County Parks and Recreation. Training is broken into two sessions with the CPR session in the morning, (This includes introduction to the AED) and the First Aid Session in the afternoon. You can attend any one of the three sessions which are held the "3rd Saturday of January, February, and March.
If you are attending both sessions, it is from 9:00 to 3:00. You are welcome to attend one session one week and the other on another week if you don't want to dedicate one full day, but there is only the three sessions planned for now.
The cost for each session is $20.00, so if you plan to attend both First Aid and CPR, the cost would be $40.00. Registration in advance is mandatory by contacting Shelly Palosky at Kent County Parks and Recreation via email at spalosky@kentgov.org or by phone at 410 778-2083.
Payment will be made the day of the session.
