Please add your ideas for special awards

I am soliciting all of you brainstorming sailors for "special" awards ideas. We are already committed to "Top Girl" in each class.

US Sailing has suggested ideas such as "Marco Polo"(the sailor that travelled farthest), "Best Recovery"(which would require keen eyes from our on-the-water volunteers), and "Sportsmanship" (which could be controversial, unless clearly demonstrated.) One possibility was offered at the meeting regarding best boat maintenance, or sharpest looking boat (which could be done by the land volunteers.) The importance of the special awards is to spread out the winnings- they should not necessarily be performance related. I'd especially like to hear from the on-the-water volunteers because only you know what you are willing to commit to.

Please use comments here to submit ideas. I'd like to collect as many as possible- remember there are no bad ideas in brainstorming!!

  1. Special Awards ideas:
    1. Sportsmanship
    2. Best Boatkeeping
    3. Best on-the-water tactics
    4. Most Courteous
    5. Best dressed

5 special awards are plenty to decide upon and present at the ceremony.

    a. Please remove 2nd & 3rd place race certificates, it'll be hard enough getting 1st place winner names right, written on certs and presented at the close of each day. And we're already awarding 35 sailors by giving out 1st place - which is a great thing!

    b. Reduce number of special awards from "10" to "5" per reco above.

    c. Thought consensus was to award medals for 1st through 5th place (i.e. not 10 deep)

Overall award winners (outside of participation memento) would be ~81/200 = 40.5% of sailors, maybe some dups, but that's a good number of awards.

Also, we can save up to $700 (that's a lot of $) if we drop the participation mementos in favor of the T-shirt which sailors are already getting as part of their reg fee. No need to decide this until we see how the budget shapes up.
